The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity. -George Bernard Shaw

Vote Delayed on HR 503

Anti-Slaughter Bill May Have to Wait Until After Break
by Amanda Duckworth

It appears unlikely the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act will be put to a vote before Congress breaks for the Fourth of July holiday.

"There had been some thought for some quick movement, but it looks like there are some scheduling and timing issues," Chris Heyde, deputy legislative director for the Society for Animal Protective Legislation, said June 28. While the vote may not come until after the holiday, a lot of lobbying is going on in Washington, D.C.

"We have had a lot of people today trying to raise some big awareness to hopefully shake things loose," Heyde said. "We've had a lot of veterinarians and Thoroughbred owners and breeders in town. Even the Hancocks are here today, Arthur and Staci (of Stone Farm near Paris, Ky.), doing some meetings as well."

The bill is believed to have the support of about 200 members of the House; to pass that chamber, a bill requires a simple majority of the 435 members... [READ ENTIRE ARTICLE]

Thank you for you blog!

I can only hope that people stopping by will THINK about it.

Horse slaughter is America's Secret shame.

It is a scar on the face of this country that we still do this.

Thank you, again.

I'd just like to ask a simple question that all the supporters of a "ban on horse slaughter" should easily be able to answer since they support the ban. What do we do with the THOUSANDS of extra horses that are going to need homes? There is already a major problem with horses being neglected & abandoned. What about the horses that are either conformationly or mentally unsound? Downright unsafe horses that just aren't able to be worked with? I am a horse lover, I have been raised around these beautiful creatures all my life, but I still understand the need for the act of slaughter. Which is worse, being put out of your misery or being locked up someplace without food/water/shelter because the owner doesn't want you and there are no homes because there is such an extreme overabundance of horses. Even WITH slaughter there is a clog in the system of horses. Too many horses not enough homes. I don't mean any disrespect to those that support the ban, I used to be against it til I realized that we truly need it.

Lexi, Amanda said she wasn't trying to offend anyone. Theres no need to get all riled up. Also, you should really do your research before stating "facts". There IS a surplus of horses, even WITH slaughter. In 1996 there was a 6.9 million horse population, and in 2005 there was a 9.2 million population. This was due to overbreeding and a decrease in the amount of horses slaughtered. About 350,000 horses were slaughtered in 1989 as compared to 2002 when only almost 45,000 were slaughtered. So contrary to your statement, they are over populated even when 100,000 are being slaughtered. And if you would read a little more carefully you would realize Amanda was saying horses do NOT deserve to be negleted. She was saying that is what will happen to them now that there is no slaughter in the US. And I AM a horse lover. I have my own and they are my business as well. We did this to them ourselves, and as unfortunate as it is, slaughter is our only way to correct our stupidity for now. Until a better solution is found to control backyard breeders, slaughter is needed. Unless you would rather call yourself a horse lover, then send them out to be abandoned and neglected. Doesn't sound so loving to me now does it?

I had my students compose letters of persuasion to our government in support of HR 503. Their little voices and passion was most inspiring. It was a moving experience for me as their teacher to rally the kids for this cause. I am very much against Horse Slaughtering, kill buyers and transporting the creatures to Mexico and Canada. I'm a huge fan of T Boone Pickens' wife and her efforts to create a wild horse sanctuary (protected of course)! Good for her to use her money for such an extraordinary cause!
OH and to the writer that support slaughtering, you're a cruel lunch bag...
